Rig Gaming Headset
Nacon is a relatively recent name in the gaming industry, particularly on this side of the Atlantic. Previously known as Bigben Interactive, the business was best recognized in Europe for its publication of video games. Nacon changed its name to Nacon two years ago and since then. It has acquired Plantronics’ rights to the RIG line of gaming headphones and peripherals.
It leads us to the Nacon RIG 500 Pro HX, Nacon’s newest wired gaming headset. Which resembles the Plantronics RIG 500 Pro we last reviewed in 2018 in both appearances and feel. Although it costs a reasonable $69.99, this headset is lightweight and comfy, but its audio quality could be better.
An Easy Wear
The RIG 500 Pro HX shares many similarities with the Plantronics RIG 500 Pro in appearance and feel, with design cues drawn from the series’ original vision as a range of modular headsets. The black metal headband and earcups are completely distinct pieces that the earcups attach to by locking into one of three mounting holes on either side of the headband.
The wire connecting the two earcups passes through a secondary band, which makes the three locations for earcup height adjustments look excessive when other gaming headsets feature a dozen click-stops or smooth sliding adjustments.
Along with a hinge-mounted connector for the detachable boom mic. The left earcup has a permanently connected, 4.2-foot-long linguini-style cable that ends in a four-pole 3.5mm plug. The microphone consists of a long capsule mounted on a short, flexible metal neck and remain supported by a plastic arm with a right-angle bend. The microphone flips up to mute or down to use when the headset remain firmly hooked onto it. Other the line has no phone controls, but it does have an in-line remote control with a volume slider. Rules are absent from t.
For Use With Nearly Anything
The RIG 500 Pro HX remain presented as an Xbox-specific headset. However, it is a portable gaming version of the RIG 500 Pro HC. They are both 3.5mm wired game headsets. Because of this, they work with any gaming system that has a 3.5mm headset jack, such as the most recent and previous generations of Xbox and PlayStation consoles, the handheld version of the Nintendo Switch, any PC with a single audio connection, and any smartphone or tablet with a 3.5mm port.
You must purchase a 3.5mm splitter if your computer has separate headphone and microphone ports. Alternatively, you may spend an additional $10 on the RIG 500 Pro HA, a PC-oriented model with a longer cable and splitter.
The RIG 500 Pro HX is a straightforward, connected stereo headset that enables Dolby simulated surround for PC and Xbox players. An activation token for two years of Dolby Atmos spatial audio processing via the Dolby Access app for Windows 10 and Xbox remain included with the headset.
Modest Microphone
The boom mic works nicely, although there is an unfavorable restriction. In test recordings, my voice sounded clear and rich, although there was some underlying background fuzz that I couldn’t ascribe to my notebook’s fan (which some mics pick up). The mic is ideal for voice conversation, but if you need a strong signal for streaming or recording, this may not be your headset. We suggest the Razer BlackShark V2 for this due to its excellent microphone. Naturally, if you’re serious about making content, we advise investing in a separate USB microphone because it will likely function better than any headset microphone.
Conclusion
The Nacon RIG 500 Pro HX is a comfortable, functional wired gaming headset with odd audio quality. Unfortunately, there is some mic fuzziness, and the sound from the sculpted headphones is a little too bright with not enough low-end thunder to counterbalance it. The Dolby Atmos activation code is a beautiful addition. But even with the processing, the sound signature isn’t the best for giving a powerful sense of directionality.
